I am trying to develop an e107 ecommerce website for somebody in South Africa. Is there an ecommerce plugin that supports other currencies and other payment gateways besides Paypal and others?

I am not aware if there is such plugin. Also the information is a little bit vague.
I am developing a shop cart for a Japanese company based on easyshop (http:// e107coders.org/ download.php? view.1659) and the currency is not an issue (you can change it and put the symbol of your own currency and prices as well).
When it comes to financial settlement I use 3rd party APIs who offer settlement solutions - the easy way. Or you can build your own system but it has to be accredited by authorities concerned (as far as I know) - VISA, Master ....
and there are the security issues too (check VeriSign for that
